Koitalel Arap Samoei

Koitalel Arap Samoei (1860 – October 19, 1905) was an Orkoiyot, the supreme chief of the Nandi people of Kenya, who led the Nandi resistance against the British colonial rule.
Koitalel Arap Samoei followed his father Kimnyole as the Orkoiyot 〔Kalenjin Online. (Talai Family and Koitalel Arap Samoei )〕 and was enthroned in 1885.〔EastAfrican, December 5, 2008: (Murder that shaped the future of Kenya )〕 When British colonials began building the Uganda Railway through the Nandi area, he led an eleven-year resistance movement against the railway.〔 On October 19, 1905, he was invited by British Col. Richard Meinertzhagen under the guise of negotiating a truce, and was instead assassinated along with his companions.〔
His son, Barsirian Arap Manyei (born 1882), was the Nandi leader from 1919 until 1922 when he was detained by the British. Barsirian was not released until 1964, making him the longest-serving political prisoner in Kenyan history.〔
A mausoleum has been built for Koitalel Arap Samoei in Nandi Hills, Kenya.〔
Construction of a Koitalel Arap Samoei University by the local government in collaboration with the University of Nairobi is currently ongoing in Nandi Hills, Kenya.
